About Partnerships for Trauma Recovery

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals from around the world who have experienced trauma due to war, torture, persecution based on identity or beliefs, violence rooted in societal roles, and other forms of interpersonal harm. PTR offers mental health and emotional support that is sensitive to cultural and contextual backgrounds, and provides services in multiple languages to meet the needs of individuals seeking safety and stability in new communities.

The demand for mental health support in the Bay Area is significant. PTR is based in Alameda County, which is home to one of the largest populations of individuals born outside the U.S. Many have resettled in the region after fleeing conflict or other serious threats. Between 2010 and 2015, 4,035 individuals arrived in the Bay Area under resettlement programs, with over half—2,206—establishing new lives in the East Bay. California handles more than 30% of related cases nationally, and a majority of PTR’s clients are in the process of seeking protection under U.S. law.

Since 2016, PTR has provided support for individuals who have experienced extreme forms of violence and trauma. This includes: (a) psychological care and case management, (b) community engagement, (c) professional training, and (d) advocacy work to improve relevant policies.
