The forum, entitled “Advancing Care for Asylum Seekers: A Multidisciplinary Forum” brought together various providers to highlight the impactful work being done in support of asylum seekers. We heard from legal expert Julie Bourdoiseau who discussed the impact of current immigration laws and policies on newcomers and asylum seekers. There was also a panel which included multidisciplinary experts such as Hon. Dana Marks, lawyers from Centro Legal de la Raza, Pangea, and African Advocacy Network, and medical providers from the Human Rights Clinic and UCSF Health and Human Rights Initiative, to discuss best practices for psychological evaluations and their importance in applicants’ journeys. Lastly, a story telling piece moderated by Dr. Monica Noriega from UCSF, centered around why we engage in our work, the challenges we encounter and how we use our voices to challenge certain systemic barriers.
